College Has Convinced Me Pedestrians Shouldn't Have the Right of Way

The number of almost-wrecks caused by kids just darting into the street like it’s Frogger or some shit is unbelievable. Today I had to swerve around this foreign kid because he stopped in the middle of the road waiting for another car to pass in the opposite direction, and later a bus I was riding in had to slam on its brakes because some chick decided that was the best way to cross a busy street was with her nose in her phone. There’s zero sense of self-preservation, it’s just, ‘well, I’m a person, cars have to to stop for me, fuggit” *runs across two-lane road ten feet in front of dually truck and bus*

We need to put the fear of God into these people, man. I went to Italy a few years ago and you had to be smart about crossing the street in Rome because those dudes will not stop for you. We need something similar here in the States, I’m tired of all these idiots. Don’t even get me started on bikers, either.

Hey now. I bike and deal with just as much shit as the drivers do. I had a foreign kid stop in the middle of the bike in front of me and and check his phone. He was quickly on the ground.

Riding responsibly (as I’m sure you do) isn’t a problem, but it’s the dudes with same mentality as the walking people that cause problems. Like, there’s this one kid I always see blowing through the engineering mall (not on the bike path, mind you) and people have to like jump out of his way or get ran over. Then again, anyone stupid enough to walk in the bike paths kind of deserves whatever they get.

I always thought it was weird that high schools had 15mph school zones in front, because by the time kids are in their mid to late teens, you’d think running out into the street without looking would be in their past. But, if anything, it seems the program should maybe be extended upward to the university/college level. Maybe I should contact my alma mater and suggest that they equip their inter-campus shuttle buses with fold-out stop signs and those yellow bars that keep people from walking into the driver’s blind spot.

College kid pedestrians are a special kind of stupid. I play chicken and I always win.

There were these drunk tailgaters that tried to cross the street where everyone on campus darts in front of traffic and assumed I’d stop. Started to cross when I was about 60 feet out, going 20 mph. Swear I parted the red fucking sea with how it looked when they realized I wasn’t stopping. Got flipped off by them, I gave em a piece of my mind in return.

Back in Thailand, you’ll be killed if you try that shit.

They definitely give pedestrians the benefit of the doubt, but if someone jaywalks recklessly, and you’re doing everything within the law, then you should be fine. Granted, you’re going to have the burden of proof on you. So next time someone darts out in front of you, go for the high score.

I hate driving around the UTexas campus. The larger intersections have periods where all the traffic is stopped so pedestrians can cross diagonally, and those meatheads still cross whenever they feel like it. When it is my turn, I go. They’ve had their turn. And they have to get out of my damned way. They cross the street whenever they want to with a stunning sense of entitlement. Seriously, if you’re in college, and you can’t figure out that we all have to wait our turn, then maybe you need to go back to kindergarten.

Sorry. You touched a nerve.

Pedestrians only have the right of way in a crosswalk or with a crossing light around here. Your state laws may differ.

It’s certainly hazardous though, something colleges should remind/educate their students about as part of campus safety.

People only cross at crosswalks at my school.

It bugs me because so much is blamed on the driver for going to fast (when still driving within the speed limit for that area) or not being aware of the pedestrian.

To me, if the driver was driving on the pavement/sidewalk and hits a pedestrian then yes it is completely his fault (unless other mitigating circumstances are taken into account), but the driver also gets some if not a lot of blame when a pedestrian walks into the road. My reasoning for that not to be the case is a driver is driving where they are supposed to be and being aware of all the things around them and possible as well as actual hazards yet a pedestrian has the advantage of looking for very large objects that invariably make quite load noises as they move on a surface they are meant to be on.

Who has the most chance of seeing the other. A guy doing the speed limit with lots of things going on around them or the person going 0-3mph looking at or for a two metre wide by 1.5 metre plus object that will be in a contrasting colour to the environment? I’m not say the driver has to be less observant or blameless but come on fair is fair and surely most of the own-us is on the pedestrian to be aware of their surroundings when entering an area several ton vehicles are present.

In the 3 minutes it takes me to get off campus from my parking lot, I almost always have to make some evasive maneuver to avoid someone stepping out in front of me. They don’t even look!

I don’t want to stereotype, but I’ve found that it’s often the foreign (read Asian) kids that are the worst offenders. I’d think that if you stepped out onto a street without looking in China you’d be flattened instantly!

So much this. Any time there’s some sort of accident involving a pedestrian the narrative’s always wondering what the driver was doing wrong (speeding, on drugs, distracted driving, whatever) and they conveniently ignore the pedestrian could’ve just been a complete moron.

Try taking a drive through the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor campus. Pedestrians have the right-of-way literally wherever. If you want to get anywhere you walk or bike. It will take 10 mins to get through the 3-way intersection in front of the union. I can’t say im innocent of this- ive only stopped at that intersection twice- but some places it is just more accepted.

Nah, I feel you, same as every other driver across college campuses, especially ones as big as UT and Purdue (which has 40k students). The worst is the kids who stare you down as they cross after the light’s turned red, like they know exactly what they’re doing and they’re daring you to hit them.

The rule for boats is that the least maneuverable craft has right of way.

That’s how it should be for pedestrians. A pedestrian can avoid a car FAR better than a car can avoid a pedestrian.

I’m with you there. I deliver pizzas in a wealthy suburb on breaks so in the spring and summer you always get these middle-aged Lance Armstrong-wannabes in full Tour De France outfits and bikes that clog up every country road in town. I’d be less irritated if they actually followed the rules of the road (stopping at stop signs, signalling, etc.) but either way they probably shouldn’t be out there unless there’s bike lanes.

A little town on U.S. 301 in SC had a metal fence between the sidewalk and the street, except at crosswalks and street corners. Must have had a horrible problem with jaywalkers.

The Hispanics in NoVA had no concept of what a crosswalk was for, and they would sashay across a multilane road rather than moving quickly, and dare you to do anything about it. More than one suddenly put themselves in high gear when they realized that Grand Marquis wasn’t slowing down.

This very thing just became a huge problem for me. I bought a house this February on a wonderful driving road (my front lawn is literally on an apex), and now that the weather is nice the road is clogged with cyclists. Big problem is, there are alot of blind corners and hills, so the cyclists are constantly in serious danger.

Fuckin A, I deal with this every day of the school year. The overseas kids are the worst about it, but plenty of regular dumb sorority girls walk into the street while glued to their phones. Nobody is going fast enough to do real damage, I just want the right to knock them on their asses in front of everyone.

I wonder if it’s a cultural thing, my school has an extremely high (almost 25%) international student population and those dudes are absolutely fearless. As much as we complain, American traffic is actually a lot more organized and safe than most other countries so they probably aren’t as scared of it as in their own countries.
